Embrace the Art of Slow Travel in Africa

Pole Pole [ /ˌpəʊleɪ ˈpəʊleɪ/ ]

Africa is vast, mysterious, and richly diverse. For many, a tour of this magnificent continent is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. All too often, we hear from agents and clients who want to pack in every sight and sound. Yet, the magic of Africa lies not in racing from one destination to the next, but in savouring each moment.

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” Ernest Hemingway

Understanding Africa’s Immensity

Many visitors underestimate just how enormous Africa is. Stretching approximately 8,150 kilometres from north to south and about 6,650 kilometres from east to west, the scale of Africa is staggering. Unlike the well-paved roads of the US or Europe, Africa’s roads invite you to take the scenic route – a reminder that travel here is as much about the journey as it is the destination.

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you.” – Anthony Bourdain

Crafting Your Ideal Itinerary

Rather than competing in an imaginary Paris-Dakar or Safari Rally, pause to ask yourself:

  • What is your dream?
  • What do you truly wish to experience?
  • Consider combinations that naturally complement each other.

For instance, pair a classic safari in Kenya or Tanzania with the endless, sun-kissed beaches of Mombasa or Zanzibar. Or, if you’re flying via Ethiopian, why not break your journey to explore Ethiopia’s ancient cultures with a few nights on the ground? Other enticing routes include combining a South African safari with the pristine shores of Zanzibar, or an itinerary that takes in Masai Mara, Victoria Falls, and Cape Town with Kenya Airways.

“I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I wasn’t happy.”- Ernest Hemingway

The Beauty of Slowing Down

After over 35 years of exploring East and Southern Africa, I’ve learned that even the most extensive journeys only scratch the surface of what this continent offers. Take the time to spend two or three nights in each destination. This pace not only allows you to fully explore the local area but also gives you the chance to relax, recharge, and connect with the heart of the region.

Africa isn’t a checklist of sights to be ticked off; it’s a soulful experience best enjoyed at a measured pace. So, as you plan your next holiday, remember to take it slow—pole, pole. Enjoy every moment, and let Africa reveal its magic to you.

“The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa – for he has so much to look forward to.”
— Richard Mullin
