Heritage Day – 24 September

Every year on 24 September South Africa celebrates Heritage Day to recognise and celebrate the country’s incredible cultural wealth.

South Africa is often referred to as the “Rainbow Nation,” a term coined by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe the country’s multicultural diversity. With 11 official languages and a myriad of ethnic groups, South Africa is a melting pot of traditions, customs, and beliefs.

For tourists visiting South Africa, Heritage Day presents a unique opportunity to explore the deep history and unique traditions that make the country such a diverse and fascinating destination. Throughout the year, but especially on Heritage Day, visitors can discover the beauty of the country through food and dance experiences or visiting historical sites.

Visiting townships like Soweto offers a glimpse into the history and culture of the predominantly black South African communities, where one can learn about the country’s struggle for freedom and experience local food and music.

Places like the Lesedi Cultural Village near Johannesburg or the Shakaland Zulu Village in KwaZulu-Natal provide interactive experiences where visitors can find out more about traditional Zulu, Xhosa, and Sotho ways of life like housing, food and dance.

A trip to Robben Island where former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years, offers a powerful reminder of South Africa’s journey towards democracy and reconciliation.

In Cape Town, the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood showcases the rich history of the Cape Malay community, with its colourful houses and the tantalising aromas of traditional Cape Malay cuisine like bobotie and samoosas.

Many South Africans mark Heritage Day with a traditional braai (barbecue), gathering with family and friends to enjoy a feast of grilled meats and vegetables. This tradition has led to the day being colloquially known as Braai Day, symbolising a common ground that cuts across different cultural divides.

The essence of Heritage Day lies in the celebration of all cultural heritages in a spirit of unity and mutual respect. Visit South Africa with Destination Africa and let us take you on that journey!
