Tourism Month is an invitation to explore the depth and diversity of South Africa, to connect with its people, and to experience the stories that shape this remarkable nation.
Whether you are a local or a visitor from afar, September offers a wonderful opportunity to discover the many wonders of South Africa and to celebrate all the unique aspects that make it one of the most vibrant destinations in the world.
As Tourism Month coincides with World Tourism Day on 27 September, South Africa joins the global community in celebrating the power of tourism to bring people together. This day, declared by the UN World Tourism Organisation, underscores the importance of sustainable tourism and its role in achieving peace and mutual understanding.
This year’s theme of “Tourism and Peace – 30 Years of Connecting People to Places and Cultures” reflects the deep connections tourism fosters across communities. Or as the South African Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille so aptly put it recently:
“This is not just about attracting visitors to our shores, it is about inviting locals and international guests to engage deeply with the stories and experiences that define us as a nation.”
Throughout September, each of the nine provinces will host various festivities to highlight the diverse tourism offerings available across the country.
For wildlife lovers, Limpopo and Mpumalanga are gateways to the world-famous Kruger National Park, where the Big Five roam freely. Here, the beauty of South Africa’s diverse ecosystems is on full display, offering unforgettable safari experiences.
Urban explorers will find much to love in South Africa’s vibrant cities. Cape Town, often regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, offers stunning views from Table Mountain and the historic charm of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Johannesburg, the country’s largest city, is a hub of culture and commerce, with attractions such as the Apartheid Museum providing deep insights into South Africa’s journey towards democracy.
One of the crown jewels of South Africa’s tourism landscape is the Garden Route, a spectacular 300-kilometre stretch of coast that runs along the southern edge of the country. Travellers can experience lush forests, pristine beaches and dramatic mountains all within a short drive of each other.
Tourism Month is not just about visiting places, it’s about connecting with people and in this instance Destination Africa extends an invitation to discover South Africa through the magic of travel.
