In 2024, Destination Africa organized an exciting trip for a group of Engineering students from Sweden.
The students began their journey with a visit to the Verde Hotel in Cape Town. Recognized for its eco-friendly design, it offered a lesson in sustainability, a textbook case for eco-conscious construction enthusiasts.
Next, they toured the Huguenot Tunnel for an exclusive peek at its inner workings. Think of it as a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour with no traffic jams. At Bosjes Chapel, students marveled at the unique architecture, learning about its one-of-a-kind roof structure. The tour took an alpine turn with a hike along Table Mountain’s Pipe Track, complemented by a visit to the Waterworx Museum, where 19th-century dam construction came to life. Hermanus and Bietangs Cave offered a coastal lunch to remember, mixing South African natural beauty with a side of history. The scenic cable car descent from Table Mountain was the cherry on top of their Cape Town experience.

Their adventure ended in Johannesburg, where they visited Immersive Technologies. The students got the unique opportunity to experience advanced mining simulators, gaining hands-on exposure to mining technology and seeing firsthand how it has evolved over the years. It was an educational session that put the “rock” in rock-solid learning.
The students dove into culture at Lebo’s in Soweto, where they experienced the vibrant urban life of South Africa’s bustling community. A trip to Harmony Gold Mine woke them up bright and early for a bang as they witnessed a dynamite detonation and explored the underground workings. Columbus Steel provided a close-up look at steel production—a great way to ‘steel’ some knowledge relevant to their field.

In Cullinan, a quick visit to the mine was paired with a fun Amazing Race-style activity, combining learning with competition. Rounding off their travels, stops at the Apartheid Museum and Mandela Bridge gave them a concise lesson in South Africa’s rich history and cultural evolution.
This itinerary offered the Swedish students an educational yet thrilling journey, proving that real-world experiences can be as engaging as any textbook—or even more!
